The perfect language app?

Language apps are a nightmare?

Do you ever think to yourself: how’s it possible that some language apps manage to exist and be used globally – even by schools and universities – despite them being bad apps?

And OK, maybe these apps actually work for you – and that’s why they’re on the market. But I’ve never met a single person who’s become fluent from an app. Now I’m not trying to say “all language apps are garbage”. But don’t you ever think:

“why is it that no one makes A COOL APP that I would want to use?”.

…because I’m INCONSISTENT. My brain is broken, and I never use an app more than twice. But I’m here to say that your brain is not broken. MAYBE, It’s just that you (and me) don’t have any decent options!

Now I’m not saying it’s easy to come up with an app that actually makes you engaged and makes you want to learn everyday. Neither am I saying that I have the ultimate answer to this problem. But one thing I believe is that I don’t think being creative is the answer to making a great app. I think functionality should always go first – the app must follow a pattern of learning that actually works – for YOU. And this pattern of learning can be different for everybody. For example, for me it’s putting into practice immediately what I’ve learned in a new language. But it’s also training my memory to remember huge lists of random words and then recognizing them later in the form of “immersion input” (by watching a video of someone speaking in my target language, for example).

So, what would be the perfect app for you? I’d like to know what you think. Because I personally think that at the end of the day, the consumer-type-of-person is willing to try anything as long as it’s free and it gives the appearance that it works. But I’m not that type of person, and neither are you, if you’re reading until here. You know better than me that nothing is truly “free”. When you get free things, those things aren’t actually free, because you’re “paying” with your attention and time – the most scarce currencies that you own. So, that said, I feel like the average person doesn’t really care about something that actually works. But how do you know if an app works? This is a question that’s in my mind a lot. Because I know what would work for me. But I don’t know if my brain works the same as your brain. But, in every case, while I haven’t made an app, I’ve made a little something that works for me (and for the way that my brain is wired). And if you’d love to try it, I’d love to teach you Italian or English with it in a one-on-one lesson with me. What do you think? I’ll leave everything down below and you can decide if it’s a good idea for you.
